A Jesus Solution to Homelessness

Recently, I tried tweeting a powerful word from Ron Hall he shared at Orange 2011. I failed to capture the awesomness and power of the statement in 140 characters. Here’s the complete post: Continue reading

Call to Discipleship

Russell Moore asked in the February 4, 2011, edition of the Wall Street JournalWhere have all the Presbyterians Gone?” His article really examines the decline of mainline Christian denominations that include the Presbyterians, Episcopalians, Methodists, and Baptists. Three of those – Presbyterians, Methodists, and Baptists – are at the heart of Bible Belt Christianity being the pioneers that created a church on every corner mentality in the early 1900s. Today, with the migration of people to urban areas and the shifting of people from family churches to community churches denominations as well as all of Christianity in the United States are seeing decline. “Is Romans 8:28 Still in the Bible?”

Life is not problem-free. As one of my friends says, “You’re either in a crisis, coming out of a crisis, or about to go into a crisis.” The key to maintaining your balance is perspective. Sometimes all it takes is for someone to ask the right question.

Years ago, I went to Sam Moore’s office for my weekly one-on-one meeting. He was the CEO of Thomas Nelson at the time and my boss. As I entered the executive suite, I felt my stomach tighten. I had bad news to report, and I was concerned how he might react. Continue reading

Neue Magazine – Rebelling with the Next Generation

Lee Adams | 08 February 2011

“Youth pastors! All they do is eat cheese pizza and go to Six Flags!” My mentor in ministry used to make visits to a local high school, and invariably, this was the comment made by the football coach as they met in the hall. I suppose most adults consider student ministry to be just that—somewhere to send your teenagers for entertainment and “no sex” preaching (usually, parents decide their child needs abstinence training after they catch a daughter making out in her bedroom; why they think it’s a good idea to let them “watch movies” unattended in her room is another issue altogether). Today, I am traveling to join my fellow Durham District pastors at the Trinity Center for an overnight Spiritual Life Retreat led by Dr. Maxie Dunham. Unlike many pastoral engagements this one come with great expectation of spiritual renewal and growth. Please keep Dr. Dunham and all those in attendance in your prayers for this special time.

Neue Magazine – A Church Divided

Dave Ramsey | 30 November 2010

Do you remember the story of the Tower of Babel? Most remember that as a negative story where people were misbehaving and God came down and scattered them, but there is an interesting and positive verse in that story. Genesis 11:6 says, “If as one people speaking the same language they have begun to do this, then nothing they plan to do will be impossible for them.” That is a statement about unity. The impact you can have when you are people of one mind is amazing. Continue reading

If your people won’t follow, it may be the result of past abandonment.

Attachment Disorder Churches

Since the fall of the Iron Curtain, several families I know have adopted children from Eastern Europe. As they grow, some of these children exhibit a set of extremely troubling symptoms: hostility, inability to form close relationships, and distrust of people, particularly authority figures. These children can become self-destructive, highly sensitive to rejection and anger, and blame everyone close to them for the problems in their lives. Continue reading

Rural Mindset | Breaking All the Rurals

How do I overcome my church’s rural mindset? Rural is not the population, but rural is the mindset of most churches. We begin to settle for the cluttered closets, dusty shelves, and routine systems of ministry. This video will show you that a rural mindset is everywhere…even on Rodeo Dr. in Beverly Hills.
