Media in Worship

My latest entry on the NCCUMC Faith and Tech blog

During 15 years of ministry media in worship has been there … well, 15 years. At a very base level there has been a printed bulletin with notes, announcements, some order of worship; there has been song material in some cases varying from official hymn and song books to printed sheets; and there has been some form of audio – organs, PAs, pianos, horns, and recorded music. For 7 years of ministry I also had the welcome addition of video media in worship. What a blessing it was and is. So here are some of my observations and reasons video in worship is a great addition.

  1. Video connects with another of the five senses: SIGHT
  2. Video brings another everyday medium to convey the message.
  3. Video screens with words to songs and elements of liturgy get faces out of books and  into the fellowship’s presence.
  4. Video brings another voice to the conversation.
  5. Video illustrates a message.
  6. Video is dynamic allowing for changes on the fly or time to time.
  7. Video equips the unprepared – no newcomer gets lost looking for a songbook, prayer book, or Bible when it is all projected.

More and more our culture is tuned to the medium of video. I hope the church can continue to tap this medium as a way to communicate the gospel.
